Stress is at a record high among college students.
Campus life is back in full swing for college students. However, it’s not all pre-game parties, pizza nights, or hanging out with friends. After the excitement of move-in day wears off, mental health challenges like anxiety, depression, and chronic emotional stress come into play.
A recent survey by a Boston University researcher revealed that mental health is at an all-time low among college students. According to the study of 33,000 undergrads, 80 percent stated that their mental health has negatively affected their academic performance, and two-thirds reported loneliness and isolation.
Schools are taking action.
College years are a time of major transitions and stress, and it’s no question that many students struggle to cope during this demanding and trying stage in their lives. Though almost every college has a counseling center, some universities are taking it a step further by adding wellness programs and initiatives to improve students’ overall health.
For example, The University of Richmond has begun to offer spa-like amenities such as yoga classes in their wellness center’s mind-body studio and a therapy dog on campus! Fortunately, they’re not the only college that’s invested in mindfulness initiatives for students. The McDonald Center for Student Well-Being at Notre Dame offers “Recess” sessions, including midday yoga on the quad.
The desire for easier solutions continues to grow.
These beautiful additions to campus life are crucial to students’ health and wellness. Unfortunately, the number of students seeking treatment for mental health issues has nearly doubled in the last five years. While schools are working tirelessly to implement and improve wellness programs, the demand keeps rising, and programs like the above take time to build. These barriers to student health have even led to student protests across the country, along with tired, “burned-out” mental health specialists that work to carry this burden.
We are breaking through the barriers.
These concerning revelations have compelled us to find a way to break through the barriers and provide immediate access to student health and wellness resources. We’ve taken the great steps schools have taken as an inspiration and combined them into an easy-to-access solution that takes one click to give your students an all-in-one health platform (and yes, we have a therapy dog, too!).
